Dear graduates, parents, friends, colleagues, ladies and gentlemen,

Good morning! This is a day for joy and celebration. To our 486 graduates and your families, I wish to express my heart-felt congratulations! I would also like to thank our honorable guests for being with us today. My special thanks go to our keynote speakers Prof. LIU Mingkang and Prof. TANG Benzhong. We very much look forward to hearing your speeches and I believe our graduates will hugely profit from this privilege.

This year is historically important to Shenzhen. On one hand, this vibrant city has arrived at a significant milestone in its 40 years’ reform and opening-up, on the other hand, Shenzhen has come to another fresh beginning in its new role as the engine of the Greater Bay Area and the country's first pioneering demonstration zone for socialism with Chinese characteristics. We are at the high time to carry forward the great causes that have been started and forge ahead into the future with new initiatives. Looking back, within 40 years, Shenzhen has metamorphosed into a city of innovation from an obscure town. The changes that have taken place are indeed beyond imagination. Such changes and the causes behind, I believe, can inspire and inform the lives of many. It can even shed light on the development of institutes, cities and countries. I have ventured to summarize the key to Shenzhen’s success into three aspects.

First and foremost, Shenzhen upholds an open and inclusive attitude. Reform and opening-up has served as an enormous driving force, energizing the city and its people, breaking barriers, and giving rise to innumerable miracles of development. With merely 40 years’ history, Shenzhen has become Asia’s fifth largest city. It is the very openness, inclusiveness, and trail-blazing spirit that keeps attracting talents from all sectors of the globe to come and settle.

President Yangsheng Xu delivers an opening speech

Second, Shenzhen owes its success to its vision for the future and its tremendous creativity. That Shenzhen has no long-established history and culture to set limits to its possibilities enables people here to try things untried and do things undone. As a result, this young city takes the lead in many areas, daily breaking new grounds in polices, commerce, culture and science.

Third, Shenzhen is established upon the very spirit of down-to-earthness. People here are keen for innovation, practical in action, and moderate in singing one’s own praises. It is built upon the hard work and dedication of its citizens out of literally nothing. That’s why we call this city home to trailblazers, entrepreneurs, and men and women of action. This down-to-earth spirit has shaped Shenzhen’s past, determined its present, and will continue to empower its future.

Dear students, 40 years ago, Shenzhen had its decisive turning point in destiny, and today, Shenzhen has once again come to a historical moment. The only difference is that what awaits us ahead now is a blueprint even grander a prospect even greater. Dear graduates, I encourage you to rise to the need of our time. I encourage you to seize the opportunities that are being created in Shenzhen and the Greater Bay Area. I also encourage you to channel your individual talents and ambition into the greater momentum of regional and national advancement. We are not just witnessing history. We are each of us shaping and defining a shared future by the decisions we make and the efforts we render TODAY.

Before parting, allow me to make a few more suggestions. First, remember to shift your perspective every now and then. Instead of seeing the world through China’s perspective always, try to view China through the world’s perspective sometimes. As young men and young women, you must strive for self-perfection through constant self-reflection and adjustment. Second, please know that the world we live in is ever-changing, its needs and expectations being dynamic. That being said, we must approach our society with our eyes open to its future possibilities. Instead of fixing our eyes on what it is now, we might as well explore what the region, the country, or even the human community would be most in need of after 10 years, 20 years, or even longer. Then you may calibrate your goals correspondingly. Third, stay creative and never let go of your independent thinking ability. The future belongs to those who think creatively, act sensibly, and inspire others with original ideas. I hope you will cherish your curiosity for inquiry and your courage for thinking differently.

Dear graduates, I see that you are in full sail and ready to depart for each of your destinations. Life can be well said to be an incredible meeting and parting. Our paths crossed here at CUHK-Shenzhen and we have made an impact in one another’s life. There might be a day when I will no longer be able to stand here and talk to you as I do today, but this campus will remain your home. As I said before, at this university, a light will always be kept for you. Wherever you go, whatever accomplishment or disappointment you might be experiencing, please remember that you will forever be called children of this university. I and those on the platform will be proud of you. Dear graduates, I give you my best wishes!

Thank you!
