His research has appeared in Journal of Politics, Political Research Quarterly, and Critical Review among other scholarly outlets. His first book, The People’s News: Media, Politics, and the Demands of Capitalism (New York University Press, 2014) addresses how audience demands drive news content. His second book, American Conspiracy Theories (Oxford University Press, 2014) coauthored with Joseph Parent, examines why people believe in conspiracy theories.

  American Conspiracy Theories

American Conspiracy Theories

Conspiracy theories have a become a topic of much concern given their involvement in political violence and other recent events. But what do we know about these things we call “conspiracy theories”? Why do people believe them? Are these beliefs increasing over time? Why do beliefs in conspiracy theories about QAnon, COVID-19, and election fraud seem to be spreading virally? What role does the internet play in the spread of these conspiracy theories?  Are conspiracy theories driving deleterious political and medical behaviors? Who is to blame for our current situation and what can, and should we do about it? Professor Uscinski will answer these and other questions by bringing to bear more than a decade’s worth of opinion polls, internet, and mass media data. The surprising answers will change how you think about those ideas we call conspiracy theories.
