《天才枪手》是最近我比较心水的一部电影了。电影的情节改变真实的SAT作弊事件，之前在新东方的时候就有所亲历，考生成绩大面积被取消和延迟发放。早在上半年泰国上映后就已经风靡亚洲，无奈最近才引进国内，缺少宣传，加之很多国内观众对于泰国电影的印象可能还停留在恐怖片和群魔乱舞的“花样美男”，这部电影国内票房表现平平。但不得不说，这部电影从表演到剪辑和配乐都相当精彩。

电影不多说，今天要分析的题目也和作弊有关。又两个月没有写东西，挑了一篇简单的托福写作真题（20170917），希望慢慢找回状态。

“Bad Genius”, a well-made Thailand movie featuring an episode of cheating in exams, swept many countries and became a box-office hit. It also has reignited the heated discussion on academic honesty. It is not uncommon to see students cheat in exams or plagiarize other people’s work. Even in high school, cheating in homework assignment is a big headache for both the teachers and parents. Of all the three options offered here, personally speaking, implementing harsher penalties would be a more sensible way of deterring student from the act of cheating.

To begin with, heavier punishment is more likely to address the problem from the root in comparison to the other two choices. A resubmission of assignments, or a verbal warning are the common practices most schools conduct, which might not appear deterrent enough. Students will still take the risk of copying other people’s answers because a free pass will be given anyway. With more strict rules imposed, for example, banning students from taking exams, recording the cheating record in their student profile, or expelling them from school outright, students may shrink from the thought of cheating. However, getting the parents involved might not be quite effective. It is not practical that parents keep an eye on their kids the whole time when they are working on the homework, and it will be difficult for them to tell if they have cheated or not. Designing an assignment that is difficult to cheat at will also have its limitation. Creativity in cheating can never be underestimated. Students can always find new ways to go about it, like searching answers online or simply finding a ghostwriter.

Also, imposing heavier punishment is more feasible for the school to carry out. All the school needs to do is to integrate the new policy into its current student’s code of conduct and inform them about the severe consequences of academic dishonesty. If they go overboard and run afoul of the regulation, then they should take full responsibility of their misconduct. Whereas asking parents to monitor their children will probably not reap the benefits as it is intended to. It won’t be a consistent effort as parents can quite busy occasionally and children may also feel uncomfortable when being watching all the time and reject it. Getting teacher involved in the process may not work out either. It would be no easy task for some subjects to design homework that are difficult to cheat at, like math. This will add more workload to the teachers, who should have been spared this hassle to spend more time on teaching. 

Academic honesty is unarguably the bottom line for a student. It is understandable that a school come up with strict rule to uphold it and under no circumstance should a student go against it.
