英文写作练笔 5

Hans

From CNBC.com

今天要分析的题目也与“富二代”有关:

Do you agree that it is better to work for business owned by someone else than to work for the business of one's own family.

The recent decades have witnessed the burgeoning of successful private businesses. This also spawned a new generation of people born with a silver spoon. These rich young people barely have to worry about money, their education, and even their career since some will follow in their parents’ footsteps as they are expected to. But some still choose to hunt for opportunities from other companies. Personally I prefer the latter choice considering individual interests and the work pressure it might bring about.

It might hold some truth that there exists more flexibility and freedom when working for one’s own family business. Minor issues like attendance check, or when to have holidays can be spared. Also, the ability to communicate with people from the managerial level spontaneously can also cut bureaucracy and improve efficiency. However, the problems of working for the business of one’s own outweigh the advantages.

To begin with, what the family business deals with might not appeal to the would-be heir. It makes sense for the older generation to involve their kids in the business temporarily whenever they are needed for certain projects, but both sides need to give it a second thought when a long-term commitment is to be made. One can only give full play to its potential and abilities when he’s engaged in something he gravitates to. It is a waste of talent to have a person who exhibits great interest in music to work in the catering business, or someone who takes delight in science to train people how to sell fast moving consumer goods. The younger generation should have the freedom to choose a career they really like rather than a family business they have no interest in but they feel obliged to help with.

Additionally, less pressure will be exerted on one’s shoulders if he works for other companies. Working for other people means you only  need to deal with responsibilities you are assigned to. However, when someone works for his own family, parents will always have higher expectations, which is likely to put a lot of strain on him. Also, a generation gap always remains in terms of ways of doing business, so disputes and conflicts will follow. At the same time, other employees may hold the stereotype of nepotism about him. In another word, whatever he does something right or wrong, the performance will mostly be judged based on the family connection rather than personal capability. A perfect example can be found in the popular American sitcom Modern Family. Claire, the daughter of a successful businessman, who works for her father’s furniture company, spent long time to make herself recognized by most people. Also, it is difficult for her to build a casual relationship with his colleagues due to her special identity.

Many dream to have been born into an affluent family with a successful business because that would have been offered a head start in their life. That may be true but it’s just part of the story. When it’s time for you to succeed the parents to their position, you need to contemplate if you actually love it, and if you can withstand the pressure your parents have undergone.
