Application Guide for International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship Online Study Program 2022-2023 in Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU)

To meet the growing demand of the international community for Chinese language teachers and facilitate Chinese language education in other countries, the Center for Language Education and Cooperation (CLEC) will continue with the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship Online Study Program. Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU) as one of the host universities, welcomes outstanding international students and teachers to apply for this scholarship program to study with us online for the upcoming semesters.

Founded in 1941, BFSU is a prestigious university in China under the direct leadership of the Chinese Ministry of Education. It is one of China’s top universities listed under the Project 985 and Project 211, both comprising top universities in China. BFSU is one of China’s oldest language universities. It has the longest history among universities of its kind in China, offering a complete range of degrees, diplomas and programs at various levels, with the largest number of foreign language programs in the country. BFSU was the first in China to recruit and teach international students, and was also one of the earliest to provide under- and postgraduate programs teaching Chinese to speakers of other languages.

Today, BFSU teaches 121 foreign languages and 101 bachelor degree programs. Excellence in the teaching and research of foreign language and literature has allowed BFSU to enjoy a good reputation for its quality programs, both at home and internationally. In the past 80 years, over 90,000 people have graduated from BFSU. BFSU now serves as an important education base for qualified professionals with language competence, who, after graduation, work as diplomats, translators/interpreters, businessmen, journalists, lawyers, bankers, etc. For example, among BFSU alumni who work or have worked in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, we have over 400 ambassadors and over 1000 counselors. BFSU is thus known as the “Cradle of Diplomats”.

Currently, BFSU offers two types of International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship Online Study Programs: One-Academic-Year Online Study Program and One-Semester Online Study Program. Teachers and trainers for the programs are all from the School of Chinese Language and Literature (SCLL), Beijing Foreign Studies University.  

SCLL is a highly international school, made up of three parts, namely, Department of Chinese Language and Literature，Department of Chinese as Second Language, and Chinese Language Training Center. All the programs in the School are open to international students. SCLL provides a platform of cross-cultural exchange for international and Chinese students so that they can study in the same school and same classroom, strengthening their learning ability and cross-cultural communication skills.

Program Introduction

SCLL trainingprograms for international students open at the beginning of spring and autumn semesters every year, with 18-week courses being taught each semester. Online scholarship students, once admitted, in line with their Chinese proficiency, will be assigned to 10 different level classes (basic, intermediate or advanced levels), with aclass size of no more than 15 students. The training focuses on Chinese listening and speaking. Each semester, 2 to 3 compulsory courses and about 10 selective courses are offered in SCLL. Those who have fulfilled the required credits will be granted certificates upon completion.

ELIGIBILITY 

All applicants shall be:

1. Non-Chinese citizens.

2. In good Physical and mental condition, well performed both academically and behaviorally

3. Dedicated to work on Chinese language education, teaching or international promotion of Chinese language.

Qualifications

1．Scholarship for One-Academic-Year Chinese Language Study  

The program commences from Sep. 2022 and provides scholarship for a maximum of eleven months.

Those who are physically in China are not eligible.

Applicants shall have a minimum score of 180 on HSK test (Level 3). Priority will be given to applicants who provide an HSKK test score.

2．Scholarship for One-Semester Chinese Language Study

The program commences from Sep. 2022 and provides scholarship of a maximum of five months.

Those who are physically in China are not eligible.

Applicants shall have an HSK certificate (but with no requirements for any level or scores)

Current Chinese language teachers applying for the above two types of courses will be exempt from providing HSK certificates, so long as they have on-the-job certificates or recommendation letters from their employers or employment institutions.

Application Deadline

For online scholarship programs starting from  Sep. 2022, the deadline is June 15,2022

Application Procedure

1.Online registration will be available from today on the Confucius Institute Scholarship website (cis.chinese.cn).Please log on to find recommendation institutions and host institutions(Beijing Foreign Studies University）. Submit applicationdocuments online, track the application progress, feedback of review andadmission results.

2.Please go through our online application at the website http:study.bfsu.edu.cn. The application procedure goes as follows,

Step 1: log onto http://study.bfsu.edu.cn, create your account, password and then begin the online registration;

Step 2: Click online application, and go to the next page;

Step 3: Click application，choose International Chinese Teachers Scholarship, and then next, and go to the next page；

Step 4：Choose General Visiting Student（Online Program），click next，and then go to the next page;

Step 5:  Click apply，and start filling out the online application form （Please note that only blanks with red star need to be filled out; personal digital photo needs not be larger than 200kb）

Step 6:  Continue to the last step, and finally click submit.

Application Documents

1. Electronic photo.

2. A scanned copy of passport photo page.

3. A scanned copy of score reports of the HSK and HSKK tests (within the two-year validity).

4. A Recommendation letter. 

Scholarship Coverage

The scholarship covers tuition fee.

Disclaimer

1.Incomplete or unqualified applications will not be processed.

2.Applicants will be disqualified from application in case of fraudulent application materials or application materials are completed and submitted by someone else.
