When You Test Positive, What You Must Do for Yourself and Pets Before Being Taken to Quarantine Sites?

China reported 1,284 new locally transmitted confirmed COVID-19 cases yesterday. Of the local confirmed cases, 890 were in Jilin, 322 in Shanghai, and 14 in Zhejiang.

Wednesday also saw 21,711 local asymptomatic carriers, 19,660 were reported in Shanghai and 1,546 in Jilin.

The majority of patients in this latest round of the epidemic are mild cases with symptoms similar to a common cold. So don't panic and try to maintain a positive attitude even in the hard time!

If you will need quarantine, the CDC will contact you first, at which point you can begin preparing. You will have plenty of time to prepare for the quarantine supplies. And this is not the time to pack light. Though some might say there's no point to bring too much stuff as it's only 14 days of stay in a temporary place, it's actually very important to make your stay more comfortable with useful items and at least maintain some life quality.

Practical day-to-day items

Think about what you'll need to manage daily quarantine life, whether its noise-cancelling headphones for work or disposable towels/clothes to stay more comfortable in the limited space.

To stay safe, first thing to bring is your masks! And don't forget to bring 3 or 4 sets of clothing, slippers, water cups, tissues, emergency medicines, all-purpose cleaning spray, your laptop for study or work, chargers, etc. A few dispoable underwear and towels can also come in handy, as in some sites there's no shower -- it'll be up to you to keep things fresh.

In addition to your normal toiletries, pack a few extras in your bag - sleeping aids like an eye mask, earplugs or even a smart light device -- makeshift hospitals can make it more diffilcult for light sleepers. If you’re sensitive to a lack of sunshine, a small light therapy lamp or extra vitamin D supplements might be worth considering. If you are packing for the eldely or patients, taking weather of your city into your consideration: some have complaint that in some makeshift hospitals it's quite cold during nights.

You will have a lot of quarantine meals ahead of you. If you have a special diet or a picky eater, you might want a stash of snacks, canned food, tea or coffee to tide you over, also, your own cutlery to wash and reuse.

Few more entertainment options to make your stay more colorful

Make a list of all the TV series, podcasts, and films you want to watch now, so you’re ready to binge.

You might also want some analogue alternatives to give you a break from screen time: a chunky novel or magazines, puzzles or crosswords.

Arrange your pets

When you are noticed by your neigborhood community that your pet will be killed, you must tell them the law and ask for their document. Call 12345, report the issue if time allows.

However, as in some cities with more severe situations, the transfering of patients can be quite fast, time left for you can be too limited to call hotlines and justify your point with the law. That's why you must have a ready-to-go bag prepared.

Keep your spare key in a key box so that your pet can be accessible.

Try to contact a friend or a family member who live about 10-20 minutes away. If you don't have one, contact a pet sitter community who have a selected group of sitters ready to take care of your pets in case of emergencies.

Never agree to head to quarantine site or makeshift hospitals before you have made sure your pet got well-arranged.In no case give away your keys to disease control staff when your pet is home alone. If it's very urgent and there's no time left for the above arrangement, ask help from a trustworthy neighbor, and put your pet near their door.

When no one nearby is willing to help, don't panic first. Quick make some 'urgent help needed' flyers, leave your address and number, post it on local help communities of all social media platforms, post it in all pet-related or neighborhood groupchats you think might be helpful, and ask people to share.

The worst scenario might be -- no one really responds to the issue, or all the pet communities are full, or your city is on lockdown and no transport allowed unless there's a special pass. In this case, try your best to let your pet go out before the disinfection staff come.

What you should know about recovery

After you have recovered, the next step is to prepare for discharge. The doctor will give you the option of continuing your isolation at home or in a hotel, with the latter being at your own expense.

Taking Shanghai as an example, if you have Shanghai medical insurance, the entire treatment is free; otherwise, you will incur some out-of-pocket expenses.

After that, you must wait for the district where you live to pick you up in a bus. Please get in touch with your subdistrict or neighborhood committee to arrange for a person to meet you at the neighborhood entrance. Only after this person has signed for you can the CDC staff leave.
