British Association for Applied Linguistics,
56th Annual Conference

In August 2023 we look forward to welcoming delegates to The University of York for the 56th Annual Conference of the British Association for Applied Linguistics. This year’s conference theme is “Opening up Applied Linguistics”. With this in mind, we aim to celebrate existing open research initiatives, which have led the way in transforming applied linguistics research by making it more accessible, transparent, reproducible and collaborative, to further realise principles of openness and inclusivity by representing a broader range of areas within applied linguistics, including but not limited to decolonizing language learning and teaching, language use in the digital age, and Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL) and to create an accessible and inclusive conference environment.

The 2023 conference programme will be organised around symposia. Each symposium will explore a theme in Applied Linguistics, broadly defined, through a combination of conceptual and empirically grounded talks, poster presentations and/or panel discussions. The first call for symposia will be released in September 2022. The first call for individual contributions to the selected symposia will be released in January 2023. An open call for individual contributions to the conference will also be released at this point.

Call for Symposia

Eligibility

If you would like to host a Symposium at the 2023 BAAL conference please complete the online form by Friday 18th November 2022.

What is a symposium? And, why propose one?

A symposium is a 2.5 hour slot featuring a number of presentations, including individual papers, panel discussions and posters, on the same topic. Symposia therefore allow for extended, interactive discussion on a specific topic. Symposia attract attendees as well as contributors with similar interests. Discussion therefore also tends to be more focused and in-depth.

There will be two calls for participation in the BAAL 2023 conference. The first call in September 2022 will be an invitation to propose and chair a symposium (deadline for proposals Friday 18th November 2022). The second call in January 2023 will be an invitation to contribute to the selected symposia (deadline for proposals Friday 17th March 2023).

Proposals to chair a symposium will be reviewed by a team comprising the 2023 Local Organising Committee and the BAAL Executive Committee. Reviewers will use the following criteria to assess your proposal: (1) relevance to BAAL members, (2) significance (of topic and/or methods), (3) presentation (clarity and accessibility), and (4) fit to conference theme.

On Friday 16th December 2022, the chairs of accepted proposals will be invited to share their proposal in their networks and invite colleagues to contribute. Symposia, and an invitation to contribute to them, will also be shared via the relevant BAAL Special Interest Groups (SIGs) as well as the general BAAL membership.
