Nonword repetition in L1 and L2 Cantonese-speaking children with and without Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) 

Project Info

This project aims to 1) better understand the nature of difficulties in nonword repetition (NWR) in children with and without DLD, 2)improve the differentiation of children with and without DLD in bilingual Cantonese-speaking children, 3)demonstrate the diagnostic potential of our new Cantonese NWR tests, 4) and provide clinicians and researchers with new assessment tools.

Expected Start Date

PhD student: 

around Sep 2023 for the next round (three rounds per year, Sep/Nov/March) (if application is successful for the Sep 2023 round, the candidate will be admitted in Semester 2 (Jan 2024)) 

Note that the candidate is expected to bid for the university Competitive 3+1 Matching Fund which prioritizes applicants from a high-ranking first degree university with a high first degree GPA or class ranking (The University provides up to 36-month stipends; the chief supervisor contributes 12-month stipends from his/her own funding source)

Stipend & Benefits

Amount of Monthly Stipend HK$18,100 (for 3 years)

Conference and Research Related Travel Allowance max. of HK$25,000 for the entire study period

Strong intellectual support: co-supervised by Dr. Angel Chan (PolyU), Prof. Shula Chiat and Dr. Kamila Polišenská (City University of London), and Dr. Sarah Chen (PolyU)

Promising prospects in publishing in high impact/ranking journals (e.g. former/ongoing PhD students able to publish in "Journal of Child Language", "Applied Psycholinguistics", “Cognition”, “Frontiers in Psychology”, and have postdoc position at a high ranking overseas research institute and associate professor faculty position at a high ranking university in China) 

Opportunity to test children in a number of linguistic/cognitive experimental tasks

Expectations

Preferably a good master/BA/BSc degree in Linguistics/Psycholinguistics/Speech Therapy with relevant training in Cantonese phonology and language development and disorders 

Preferably some knowledge of Cantonese

Preferably knowledge and proficiency in statistics

Preferably some experience in testing young children

Good academic English writing skills

Willing to transcribe and code massive experimental data
