译味译境 | 《赠白马王彪（其四）》英译三种

黄初四年五月（223），曹植、曹彪、曹彰一起进京觐见魏文帝曹丕。曹彰死在京城，只剩下曹植和曹彪一同返回封地。在回封地的路上，有监视他们的官吏，不许他们同路而行，于是曹植写下了长诗《赠白马王彪》，赠送给曹彪。诗人以充满激愤的笔调，表达了自己受迫害，被限制自由的内心苦闷。全诗共分七章，此处为大家分享的是第四章及三个英译本。
赠白马王彪（其四）
曹植
踟蹰亦何留？相思无终极。
秋风发微凉，寒蝉鸣我侧。
原野何萧条？白日忽西匿。
归鸟赴乔林，翩翩厉羽翼。
孤兽走索群，衔草不遑食。
感物伤我怀，抚心长太息。
英译一：
To Cao Biao, the Prince of Baima
Cao Zhi
I stop and look behind but cannot stay;
Yet thoughts of you are lingering on the way.
I feel the chill of autumn winds that groan;
I hear the cold cicadas weep and moan.
When I look upon wildness so unblest,
The pallid sun descends into the west.
A bird returning home among the trees
Flaps its spreading wings in the breeze.
A stray beast seeking its crowd north and south
Forgets to eat the grass within its mouth.
Saddened by the sights revealed to me,
I heave a long, long sigh at what I see.

Though at a loss, how can I stay?
Ill think of you till we grow old.
The autumn wind brings chilly day;
By my side chirp cicadas cold.
How wilderness is bare and bleak!
The sun is soon lost in the west.
For the tall trees homing birds seek,
Flapping their wings towards their nest.
A lonely beast seeks its counterpart;
Grass in its jaws, when can it eat?
At their sight I feel sad at heart;
Deeply I sigh to slow its beat.

I hesitate: what is it that I long for?
My love for you feels limitless.
And now the autumn wind brings chill,
and a shivering cicada chirrups at my side.
So desolate is this wilderness,
the bright sun suddenly extinguished in the west.
The birds hurry past me, home to the treetops,
with urgent, widespread wings.
A lonely animal snuffles for its companions,
grass in mouth, no time to swallow.
My heart is grieved to find itself in such a place.
Hand on my chest, a lengthy sigh escapes me.
