《三十而已》，Nothing but Thirty？

电视剧《三十而已》聚焦三十岁上下女性群体，讲述了全职太太（full-time housewife）、专业销售（sales professional）和普通职员（run-of-the-mill working lady）三位都市女性的困境与蜕变，从播出到完结一直热度不减。


剧名翻译


如果要把《三十而已》剧名翻译成英文，你会怎么翻呢？

网友提出了“Only Thirty”“Just Thirty”“Thirty, So What?”等译法，官方给出的英译名是Nothing but Thirty，只不过三十岁，有种“三十不过是个数字罢了”的洒脱感。

词组nothing but表示“只，仅仅”，用在名词、不带to的不定式或动词-ing形式前，例：

❶ Nothing but a miracle can save her now. 
现在只有出现奇迹才能救活她。

❷ It did nothing but make us ridiculous. 
这只是让我们显得滑稽。

❸ They care for nothing but fighting.
他们除了战斗，什么也不关心。

nothing but的同义表达


除了nothing but，还可以用only、no more than、just、merely、simply表达“只不过”：

❶ The comments were only/merely made in sport.
那些话只不过是开个玩笑。

❷ The restaurant was no more than a glorified fast-food cafe.
这地方美其名曰餐馆，其实只不过是个快餐店而已。

❸ The so-called bargain was just a big con!
这种所谓的减价优惠只不过是个大骗局！

❹ The child is simply hungry for affection.
这个孩子只不过是渴望得到爱。

 

“三十而立”


剧名《三十而已》，很容易让人联想到孔子说的“三十而立”，出自《论语·为政》：

吾十有五，而志于学，三十而立，四十而不惑，五十而知天命，六十而耳顺，七十而从心所欲，不逾矩。

英国著名汉学家理雅各（James Legge）的译本为：

At fifteen, I had my mind bent on learning.
At thirty, I stood firm.
At forty, I had no doubts.
At fifty, I know the decrees of Heaven.
At sixty, my ear was an obedient organ for the reception of truth.
At seventy, I could follow what my heart desired, without transgressing what was right.

decree  n. 法令；政令
transgress  v. 越轨；违背（道德）；违犯（法律）

再来欣赏另一位英国著名汉学家亚瑟·威利（Arthur Waley）的翻译：

At fifteen I set my heart upon learning. 
At thirty, I had planted my feet firm upon the ground. 
At forty, I no longer suffered from perplexities. 
At fifty, I knew what were the biddings of Heaven. 
At sixty, I heard them with docile ear. 
At seventy, I could follow the dictates of my own heart; for what I desired no longer overstepped the boundaries of right.

有关年龄的表达


The show attracted wide attention, and it strongly resonated with female audiences. Many thirty-something working women saw their own lives reflected in the show.

说到“三十多岁”，我们最熟悉的表达是in one’s thirties。上面的句子提供了另一种表达thirty-something，可作形容词或名词，如：

I’d guess she’s thirty-something.
我猜她三十多岁。
a new comedy aimed at thirty-somethings
一部以三十几岁的人为主要观众的新喜剧

这两种表达指的都是30到39岁之间，如果想进一步限定范围，可以说：
in one’s early thirties      三十出头
in one’s mid-thirties        三十五六岁
in one’s late thirties        快四十岁


“快...岁”还可以用be getting on for、be pushing、close on/to、near(ly)，如：

He’s getting on for/pushing seventy.
他近七十岁了。
He’s nearer seventy than sixty.
他六十多岁，快七十岁了。 

如果要比较年龄大小，除了最基础的 ... years older/younger than，我们还可以用junior或senior，“比某人小…岁”为：
be … years sb’s junior
be sb’s junior (by …)

例句：She’s four years his junior.
= She’s his junior by four years.
她比他小四岁。

“比某人大…岁”自然就是be … years sb’s senior 或 be sb’s senior (by …)啦！
