沃尔特·惠特曼这首诗是为了纪念被暗杀的美国总统林肯。在诗中的Captain指的是总统亚伯拉罕-林肯，ship指的是美国，暗喻林肯总统是美国的舵手，最终被暗杀去世。电影《死亡诗社》中的Robin Williams曾引用过这个称呼。
