「resemble」意思是“看起来像，显得像”，不仅可以指代人，也可以指代物品很相像。比如“她跟她姐姐很像”She closely resembles her sister，“许多酒店看上去都差不多”Many hotels resemble each other.

「spitting image」这个词侧重表示“长得特别像”，比如“你跟你爹太像了 ，简直就是照着他的模子刻出来的”You're the spitting image of your father.

「take after」可以表示在外表、举止、性格方面像某个家庭成员，比如《我的天才女友》里面的 Nino is such a scumbag, just takes after his father，真是有其父必有其子。

10 Lazy Susan 餐桌圆转盘（方便取食）

餐桌转盘是一种放置于桌子中央，可用来移动食物的转盘，通常是圆形，常见于中式餐厅。

原本英语中称这种转盘为「dumbwaiter」（哑巴侍者），但是后来被美式英语中的「Lazy Susan」（懒惰的苏珊）所取代，而原本的dumbwaiter，则在许多地区，转变成为用来指餐厅里输送餐点上下楼的电梯设备。

Lazy Susan这个字常被认为是源自一位叫做苏珊的女仆，或是因为过去的女仆普遍叫做苏珊。不过这些理论都没有证据，而且在Lazy Susan开始广泛使用的年代或地区里，仆人已经相当少见。另一种理论则认为，Lazy Susan其实是一家公司所想出来的商品名称与广告手段。

注意：在非正式的口语中，不要轻易用 vegetable (植物人) 这个说法，这个词会有点 offensive.

vegetable 除了有“植物人”的意思之外，还可以生活单调乏味的人，例句：自从失业以来我感到百无聊赖 Since losing my job I've been vegetable.

04 pull the plug (on sth)

终止某个项目或者某个行动计划

plug 还有“为书或者电影大作推销、宣传”的意思，用现在的网络用语来说就是“恰饭”（宣传带货）。

在 Jimmy O.Yang 的 How to American 这本书就出现了 plug 的用法，而且还有个4月晨读学过的表达「throw sb under the bus」(背信弃义）。

除了上面两个常见的说法之外，英文中的「The giene is out of the bottle」也可以表示类似的意思，“妖怪被放出了魔瓶 and he is not going back（后果不堪设想）”。

造句：My PMS is acting up.

拓展：PMS 也就是 premenstrual syndrome，可以理解女性在大姨妈来临期间出现的一些症状，例如 acne(粉刺)、mood swings(情绪起伏)、abdominal pain(腹痛)、bloating diarrhea(腹泻) 等等。

其实相对应的，男性在每个月的那么几天也会有类似的症状，例如 hypersensitivity, frustration，anxiety. and anger，这一系列症状英文中叫做 IMS (Irratable male syndrome).

08 Walk in on sth/sb 冷不丁撞见某人做某事

拓展：课上提到这个表达的时候，想起另外两个短语「catch someone with their pants down在某人尴尬不备的时候逮个正着」「catch sb red-handed 当场抓住」，设想一下原配抓小三的使用场景，是不是非常形象？

长得矮  vertically challenged
