About the speaker

Mark Baker

Mark Baker is Distinguished Professor of Linguistics and Cognitive Science at Rutgers University in USA. He received his Ph.D. in Linguistics in 1985 from MIT. He taught at McGill University in Montreal for 12 years before moving to Rutgers in 1998. Prof. Baker specializes in the syntax and morphology of less-studied languages, particularly those of the Americas, Africa, and Asia. He seeks to bring together generative-style theories, data collected from fieldwork on diverse languages, and typological comparison in a way that illuminates all three–an approach sometimes called Formal Generative Typology. He has written five research monographs, numerous journal articles, and one book for a popular audience (The Atoms of Language (2001)). He is also interested in studying the human mind, including the possibility of nonbiological, dualistic approaches.

Julie Legate

Julie Legate,

Julie Legate is a professor of linguistics in the Department of Linguistics at the University of Pennsylvania in USA. Her research is in syntactic theory, and the syntax, morphosyntax, and syntax-semantics of endangered, understudied, typologically interesting languages. She has secondary research interests in language acquisition. She is particularly interested in passives, impersonals, and related constructions; case; and locality domains.

Joseph Bayer

Joseph Bayer,

Joseph Bayer is a professor in the department of linguistics at the University of Konstanz in Germany. He is interested in syntactic theory, syntax-semantics interface, syntax-morphology interface, German(ic) syntax, word order, case, complementation, focus particles and discourse particles. He is also interested in dialects and psycholinguistics, including language comprehension, syntactic parsing and language and brain.

02

Case

  1. Are direct cases a byproduct of Agree or do they derive from the algorithm of dependent case?

  2. How do you account for ergative vs. accusative alignment?

  3. Morphological case vs. Syntactic case

Linguistics Flash-Mobs

Gianollo, A. Giorgi, C. Guardiano, M. T. Guasti, M. R. Manzini, E. Pagliarini, E. Sanfelici, A. Tomaselli协办。

"Linguistics Flash - Mobs" is a series of video conferences thought to be a way to keep the linguistic community connected during this troublesome period. In each conference, two seminal scholars will face long-standing theoretical issues making use of different frameworks: fun is guaranteed with these "sword fights"!

This project has been thought and organised by Cecilia Poletto, with the help of C. Gianollo, A. Giorgi, C. Guardiano, M. T. Guasti, M. R. Manzini, E. Pagliarini, E. Sanfelici, A. Tomaselli.
