C919 granted TC, when is PC? EASA/FAA is the illusion?
China's commercial aircraft C919 received a certificate from the Civil Aviation Administration of the Communist Party of China on Thursday (September 29) . Curiously, neither Comac nor the CAAC had officially released the information by the deadline.
The C919 is a mainline civilian aircraft developed by Comac, also known as the “Home-grown large aircraft”, with 158-168 seats, against Boeing's B737 and Airbus's A320. The project was formally launched in 2007 and then moved to the design and development phase, 14 years after its inception.
Over the past 14 years, the C919 has repeatedly reported delays and missed deadlines. The C919 has never made an appearance at the China air show, the country's most important aviation event, and it is unclear whether it will be on display or fly in November.
The next challenge is how much capacity the C919 will have if it goes into mass production. Comac has not provided details on the production figures.
Based on the two-and-a-half years it took Comac's regional jet, the ARJ21, to get its model certification and manufacturing license, Richard Aboulafia, us-based general manager of AeroDynamic Advisory, an aviation consultancy, predicted that the company would not be able to make the ARJ21, the C919 will also go through a“Painfully slow production” ramp-up.
Although the C919 is assembled in China, it relies heavily on western components. Foreign suppliers include General Electric, Honeywell International, and CFM International, a joint venture between GE and France's Safran Group, for engines.
Like the ARJ21, the C919 lacks certification from US and European regulators, limiting flights to the domestic market and countries that may have close ties to China.
Currently, the C919 is only allowed to fly in China, and overseas flights must wait until it is certified by foreign regulators. The Federal Aviation Administration declined to comment.
A spokeswoman for the European Aviation Safety Agency confirmed that the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) had been working with Chinese Comac and Communist Party regulators for several years, but could not comment on when the European certification of the C919 would be completed.
