David Crystal is one of the world's most eminent linguists, and in this exclusive clip he speaks about how languages and trends in language develop, where language comes from and how he found his love of the spoken and written word. He goes on to explain the movement and progression of language and how we must understand why and when to stick to rules and when it is OK to break them.

Professor Crystal puts complex ideas across in crystal clear language. In that way, he lives up to his name. The more interdisciplinary tradition of linguistics that British linguists like him initiated is not dull at all, because of the way it combines linguistic study with culture, literature and society. I started reading Professor Crystal's books when I was 16 and have always loved them. I wish him good health and long and happy life.
