白立方欣然推出“半轮黄日”（Half of a Yellow Sun），这是伊伯翰姆·马哈马（Ibrahim Mahama）在香港以及大中华地区的首次展览。作品包括精选的全新织物绘画，艺术家在其中对材料、商业与文化身份的历史进行了探索。

展览标题取自尼日利亚作家奇马曼达·南戈齐·阿迪奇（Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie）的小说，这部作品聚焦于20世纪60年代末的尼日利亚内战，而个别作品的灵感来自于泛非主义音乐家和政治活动家费拉·库蒂（Fela Kuti）在20世纪70年代的歌曲目录。对马哈马来说，横跨非洲的这段摆脱英国殖民统治的独立时期，长久以来一直是其灵感的来源。正如艺术家所说：“这是一个非洲的故事，伴有超越混乱的自由思想。”

这些作品所采用的材料包括马哈马这几年来收集的拼贴材料，过程涉及从加纳各地市场工作的商人（主要是妇女）那里以新布换旧布。这些被称为“荷兰式蜡染”的布，最初是由19世纪在西非沿海一带经营的荷兰公司制作并进行交易的，图案密集、色彩鲜艳。这种织物为出口荷兰的东印度殖民地而开发，采用传统的印尼巴蒂克印花（batik）设计，凭借比正宗蜡染布更低廉的制作成本被大规模生产；但是，这些产品遭到东南亚客户的刻意回避，这导致荷兰卖家开始积极寻求其他市场。荷兰商船在西非港口城市（譬如阿克拉）停留加油时找到了蜡染仿制的市场，这种蜡染很快就被修改为涵盖非洲灵感的设计。荷兰式蜡染布最终成为非洲设计和文化的代名词，于日常穿着的许多情况下作为一种非语言的交流方式，或在正式场合象征财富、权力或影响力。

马哈马绘画中的的许多织物小块都因其设计而被赋予名字，如“速度之鸟”（Speed Bird，来自“今天富，明天穷”的谚语，指金钱很容易“飞”走），“乌龟”（Tortoise，表示决心、力量和耐心）以及“眼睛”（Eye，表示你的错误行为仍然会被全能的上帝看到）。另一种常见的设计呈现了一系列树木排列成新月形的样子，接近于大脑的形状和肌理。这种被称为“科菲·安南的大脑”（Kofi Annan’s Brains）的印刷品是在这位加纳籍联合国秘书长于纽约发表最后讲话的当天进行商业发行的，其中提及了安南的才智。马哈马对材料的政治维度以及蕴含在其中的劳动形式（forms of labour）感兴趣。在后殖民时代的非洲，这些织物代表着对民族和泛非身份多样性的颂扬；在将所有这些碎片汇集在一起时，马哈马能够把不同的历史、文化范式、具象和抽象形式叠加起来，作为他对殖民化遗产展开的持续调查的组成部分。

伊伯翰姆·马哈马（Ibrahim Mahama）1987年生于加纳北部城市塔马利。他生活并工作于加纳首都阿克拉、中南部城市库马西与塔马利。近期群展包括第22届悉尼双年展“NIRIN”（2020年）、第58届与第56届威尼斯双年展（2019年与2015年）、第14届卡塞尔文献展（2017年）等。个展包括英国曼彻斯特大学惠特沃思美术馆/曼彻斯特国际艺术节“Parliament of Ghosts”（2019年）、南非开普敦Norval基金会“Labour of Many”（2019年）、以色列特拉维夫艺术博物馆“Fracture”（2016年）等。2019年，马哈马在塔马利开设了艺术家运营的项目空间Savannah当代艺术中心（SCCA），伴随着他在附近开设的庞大的工作室与研究综合体——红土（Red Clay）。2021年，马哈马在塔马利还在一个翻新的筒子楼内开设了文化与教育机构——Nkrumah Voli-ni，以延伸SCCA与红土的活动。

白立方的公共展览跨越四个空间，包括位于伦敦南部的白立方柏蒙西空间（Bermondsey），白立方梅森广场空间（Mason’s Yard）和白立方香港在中环的空间，以及线上展厅。画廊分别在巴黎和纽约也设有办公室。白立方自1993年创立以来，已展出了许多世界上最受好评的当代艺术家的作品。
