This book contains the transcripts of the 10 lectures I gave in October 2016 at the Shandong University of Finance and Economics in Jinan, China. I am very grateful to the series organizer, Professor Dingfang Shu, and to my local host, Professor Yi Li, for inviting me, and to China Cognitive Linguistics Association (CCLA) for financing my stay.

In this Lecture Series I presented work done during the first 15 years since commencing my studies for a PhD in linguistics. Rather than presenting polished results, I deliberately chose to share my journey: the search for an adequate theory, my first steps into the wonderful world of corpus linguistics, the excitement (and frustration) of learning a range of quantitative methods, and the move towards incorporating an experimental approach. After all, these are the changes that will make it possible to pursue a cognitively realistic account of language.
