Capability creation: Heuristics as microfoundations

While much research suggests that capabilities are critical for firms, little is known about the individual-level origins (“microfoundations”) of capabilities. Using in-depth nested case studies, we explore how firms develop an internationalization capability. The setting is six entrepreneurial firms from three culturally distinct countries. Our data show that executives begin by seeding the process with imperfect heuristics and then managers continue development by elaborating their understanding of what task to perform and how to perform it. Importantly, managers across hierarchical levels support the development of their firm's internationalization capability by abstracting key heuristics away from any one experience such that the capabilities become less routine over time. Overall, we contribute to the microfoundations movement in strategy and to the literature on organizational learning.

Especially new firms need to be strategic flexible to proactively or reactively adjust to the market and internal demands as they aim to establish themselves. However, new firms vary in their degree of strategic flexibility. In this paper, we analyze resource management practices founders can use to increase the strategic flexibility of their firms. We depict how specific resource management practices can augment the strategic flexibility of a new firm in addition to the strategic flexibility resulting from their actual resource base. Scrutinizing innovative resource management practices in various domains, our findings especially underline the importance of specific innovative resource management practices in the financial domain to increase the strategic flexibility.

Extant research has largely ignored if and how product diversification strategy influences IPO performance. We intend to fill this gap in the literature, especially in relation to transition economies where the role of diversification is institutionally bound. Specifically, drawing on the strategic actions and political connections arguments, we contend that the level of a firm's product diversification has a positive relationship with IPO underpricing. Given the prominent role of business groups in shaping firms’ diversification strategies in transition economy, we further examine whether business groups’ nonmarket capital—political, relational, and reputational capital—moderates the relationship between product diversification strategy and IPO underpricing.

Delineating between conservative and entrepreneurial firms to discern the causes, consequences, and benefits of entrepreneurial behavior is a key conversation in strategic entrepreneurship research. We introduce to this conversation a new construct, Strategic Entrepreneurship Behaviors, which we argue provides several theoretical and practical benefits to scholars exploring strategic entrepreneurship phenomenon. We develop and validate a measurement model for the Strategic Entrepreneurship Behaviors construct using a three-study design in Japan and in the United States. To facilitate reproducibility and replication of our results, we posted all data, R code, and Supporting Information on the Open Science Framework website available at https://osf.io/ rqw5u/.



Computational modeling of entrepreneurship grounded in Austrian economics:Insights for strategic entrepreneurship and the opportunity debate

This paper makes three key arguments: (a) that computational modeling is a key methodological tool that can aid in the development of formal economic foundations for entrepreneurship that are grounded in Austrian economics; (b) that computational modeling grounded in Austrian economics can serve to integrate models of competitive advantage in equilibrium (economic foundations of strategy) with models of the entrepreneurial function in disequilibrium (economic foundations of entrepreneurship), thereby providing an economic foundation for strategic entrepreneurship; and (c) that the mathematical precision of computational modeling grounded in Austrian economics can serve to clarify the logic behind differing perspectives that have led to debates fueled by the imprecision of natural languages, such as the opportunity debate in the entrepreneurship literature.
