Having been supported by the continued reforms and experiments over the past 30 years, Pudong, though it accounts for only 1/8000 of China's total land area, is a powerhouse contributing 1/80 of the country's GDP and 1/15 of total imports and exports.

The area's GDP surged 211 times from 6 billion yuan ($900 million) in 1990 to over 1.2 trillion yuan in 2019. Its total foreign investment has reached $103 billion and it has gathered over 36,000 foreign-funded enterprises and headquarters of 350 multinational companies from 170 countries and regions, data from the Pudong government showed.

Emerging from the shadow of the COVID-19 pandemic, China's consumption rebounded with a total sales revenue of 498.2 billion yuan ($74.1 billion) and 271.5 billion yuan ($41 billion) on Tmall.com and JD.com, respectively, during the Singles' Day shopping festival.

The festival actually started in late October, earlier than ever, and the first sales boom came on November 1. China's new deep-sea manned submersible Fendouzhe, or Striver, set a national diving record of 10,909 meters on Tuesday in the Challenger Deep, a 11,000-meter chasm located at the bottom of the Mariana Trench in the western Pacific Ocean, according to China Central Television.

据中国中央电视台报道，中国新型深海载人潜水器“奋斗者”11月10日在挑战者深渊创下了10909米的中国载人深潜纪录。挑战者深渊位于西太平洋马里亚纳海沟底部，深度达11000米。

Fendouzhe, one of the world's deepest-diving manned submersibles, is capable of carrying up to three passengers to conduct scientific research in the deep sea. It is electrically powered and can operate for around 10 hours underwater.

“奋斗者”是世界上下潜最深的载人潜水器之一，最多可搭载3人在深海进行科学研究，采用电力驱动，可在水下作业10小时左右。

The submersible, together with the mother ships Exploration 1 and Exploration 2, set off from Sanya, Hainan Province, for the 10,000-meter-deep-sea diving operation on Oct. 10.

今年10月10日，“奋斗者”与母船“探索一号”“探索二号”一起，从海南三亚启程，开展万米级海试。

A recent report in the medical journal Lancet says Chinese people have been gaining height in the past 30 years. The report says the average height of 19-year-old Chinese males is 175.7 cm, making them the fifth tallest in Asia and the tallest in East Asia; the average height of Chinese females is 163.5 cm, the tallest in the region.

近日，一项发表在柳叶刀杂志上的新研究发现，中国人在过去三十多年变得越来越高。研究显示，中国19岁男性平均身高为175. 7cm，在亚洲排名第五，东亚排名第一；中国女性平均身高也是东亚第一，为163.5cm。

More importantly, from 1985 to 2019, the average height of Chinese males saw the biggest rise among all the 200 countries and regions surveyed, while that of women ranked third.

The official Twitter account of the Nobel Prize tweeted recently that the laboratory notebook used by Nobel laureate Marie Curie is still radioactive and will be for 1,500 years.

诺贝尔奖官方推特账号日前发布推文称，居里夫人在实验室使用过的笔记本时至今日依然具有放射性，且还将持续1500年。

Marie Curie, the physicist and chemist who conducted pioneering research on radioactivity, died of aplastic anemia in 1934, a result of years of exposure to radiation through her work.

She was the first woman to be awarded a Nobel Prize, the first person to be awarded twice and is still the only person to receive the prize in two different scientific fields.
