Bio: Lorna Hutson (MA Hons, DPhil Oxon, FBA) is Merton Professor of English Literature at the University of Oxford. She has taught at the University of California at Berkeley and the University of St Andrews. Her publications include a foundational study of Thomas Nashe (1989), The Usurer’s Daughter (1994), The Invention of Suspicion (2007), Circumstantial Shakespeare (2015) and the Oxford Handbook of English Law and Literature 1500-1700 (2017). She has won the Roland Bainton Prize twice (2008, 2018) and is currently at work on the book project England’s Insular Imagining.

Abstract: In the reign of Elizabeth I, the contested claims of English sovereignty over Scotland, based in the mythic ‘British’ history of Brutus and King Arthur, were replaced by a poetic and chorographic image of England itself as an island with no land border. How did this happen and what did it mean for relations between England and Scotland? This lecture will explore those questions, tracing changes and transformations through war propaganda, river poetry, chorography, antiquarianism and cartography, to offer some new ways of reading Spenser’s Faerie Queene (1596).

中心简介浙江大学外语学院中世纪与文艺复兴研究中心（Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies，简称CMRS）于2016年12月30日在杭州成立。作为国内第一家中世纪与文艺复兴研究中心，CMRS的使命是整合研究力量，推进浙江大学的中世纪与文艺复兴研究，搭建中国大陆、海峡两岸和国际学术交流平台，服务中世纪与文艺复兴研究学术共同体。著名学者沈弘教授担任中心名誉主任。CMRS目前出版三套丛书：中世纪与文艺复兴译丛、《中世纪与文艺复兴研究》丛刊和文艺复兴论丛，均由中心主任郝田虎教授主编，浙江大学出版社出版。
