Q&A about reading

Q 1

Do you love reading?

For the question of whether they like reading, the keywords of the international students interviewed are "interest", "habit" and "passion". Although they have different reading habits, books are an indispensable part of life.

The international friends we interviewed all agreed that they like reading very much, and some even developed the hobby of reading from childhood, like Ruyi (translation) from Mongolia said that she fell in love with reading under the influence of her parents when she was a child. Kate from Belarus, an undergraduate from the School of Journalism and Communication, said that she likes to read and has the habit of reading three to four days every week, and her major has also further increased her reading.

Queenie Liu, an undergraduate from the UK who is studying at the School of Economics and Management, said, "reading is not just reading the text printed on the book, it is also the process of exploring and knowing yourself". Although there is no strict regulation for her to read on which day, she does enjoy reading at special times, such as rainy days. WhileRichard Sulisthio, an Indonesian friend who studies at the School of Software, also likes to read books. He reads when he wants to read, and he does enjoy it too.

Personally, I also feel that I really enjoy reading on rainy days!

Q 2

How do you learn and read during the pandemic?

Although the epidemic has restricted the movement of international students, everyone's reading and learning have not been interrupted. They use paper books and e-books around them, make full use of Tsinghua Library, database and other resources to learn, and do realise the importance of independent learning and keeping reading in this special period.

Grace Lim, a Malaysian undergraduate from the School of Journalism and Communication, believes that despite the current epidemic, the habit of reading should never be lost. Zane Qi, a student from Canada, said that he will make full use of the extra time for some reading. Liu Lizhen (translation), an undergraduate from South Korea who studies in the department of foreign languages, also says that staying at home during the pandemic has provided her a lot of time to read her favourite novels.

As for the Pakistani doctoral student Zeeshan Khan, he said that although he is not on campus during the epidemic, he tries to get in touch with the teacher and classmates of the research group, and tries his best to learn by reading many new books and articles. His computer full of reading materials has become his "best friend".

While Tiffany Houngues from France believes that the current online teaching has decreased the further interactions among teachers and students, and it does require students to read more to consolidate knowledge, and the number of books she has read has also increased during this time.

When paper materials are difficult to obtain, we often can only stare at the screen. Don’t forget to relax your eyes and take a short break~

Q 3

What are your favourite books?

Teino from Japan

Take the books as a bridge to get a glimpse of the world that we have never seen before. Everyone has different reading preferences, and the world-wide good books are loved by them. For instance, "Tess of the d'Urbervilles" and "Pride and Prejudice" are two of their favourites.

Zane Qimentioned that he likes to read some drama literature, and he read Shakespeare's plays and "The Death of a Salesman" during high school. He does like to put himself in the emotions and actions of the characters set by the author, and further try to figure out the emotions and thoughts that the author wants to convey.

Like many Chinese friends, Paige Pichaya Pinijkuldee from Thailand who studies at the College of Humanities is also a loyal fan of the "Harry Potter" series. She believes that whether she is watching the "Harry Potter" movie or reading it can keep herself in a good mood during the outbreak. Teino, an undergraduate from Japan who studied at the School of Humanities, and Richard Sulisthio, also recommended the best-selling novels "Confessions" and "The Book Thief" adapted into movies, respectively.

A book with good contents can bring people in-depth thinking about human beings and life itself. Grace Lim recommends a book called "Will you kill that fat man?". This book is a book recommended by her teacher. The author David Atman discusses some issues of human ethics, philosophy, and sociology Including tram problems. She likes to read this book due to interest and these ethical and philosophical issues do require humans to think thoroughly and face. While Queenie Liu recommends "The Road Less Traveled", she thinks that the philosophy in this book let her think more deeply about the problems in life.

Q 4

Have you read some books to learn more about China?

Zane from Canada

Chi Jiong from Malaysia

Reading is an important way to fully understand a culture. Many other international friends will better understand China through books. Many international friends interviewed say that they can better understand China through reading books.

Kate has taken studying as an opportunity, she read some books about China, such as "Red Star over China". Queenie Liu has read many books about Chinese history and society. The Chinese writer she admires the most is Lu Xun. While Zane Qi feels that it is very difficult to understand when he began to read "Farewell My Concubine", but after further reading and understanding, the books have left him a deep impression. On the other hand, Choong Chi Jiong said that although he knows less about China through reading books, he will gain a deeper understanding of Chinese culture through documentaries and TV series.

Q 5

Do you prefer to read paper books or e-books?

Diana from Zimbabwe

Daniel Walsh from the UK

Nowadays, "electronic book" has often become a topic that has to be discussed when it comes to reading. Many international students have mentioned the convenience and environmental friendliness of e-books, and even believe that e-books are replacing paper books, but there are still many people like to read paper books.

Kate said that she likes the smell of books, the feeling of turning pages, and she thinks that reads paper books just like talking with history. Ruyi from Mongolia also said that although e-books are convenient, she still prefers to read paper books. Choong Chi Jiong thinks that to own a physical book can make him feel that he does "read a book"Daniel Walsh from the UK, a freshman who studies the humanity and social sciences also agrees that he enjoys the feeling of reading paper books, and he thinks that this can avoid being exposed to blue light while reading e-books.

Diana, a Zimbabwean student, said that she prefers to read e-books, and feels that she can access a lot of information more quickly through technology. Tiffany Houngues also believes that online reading is more environmentally friendly and cost-effective.
