该书是目前国际顶尖出版社出版的第一部用系统功能语言学研究非限定现象的专著，是作者的国家社科基金结项成果。剑桥大学出版社聘请的匿名审稿人之一给出的总体评价是：“该书作者提供了有深刻见解、极具原创性乃至与正统完全不同”（原话为an insightful and rather original or even heterodox）的研究。
“非限定”普遍存在于绝大多数自然语言中，基本的特点是动词不因时态而发生屈折变化，也不具有体、语气或者语态特征。虽然目前各大语言学理论都对非限定现象做出了解释，尤其是其在小句中的角色与分布，但无论用什么理论，有关非限定的众多例证仍然得不到很好的解释。该书依据有关非限定和限定方面的研究文献，提出了非限定性的判断标准。对于缺乏形态标记的语言，非限定成分的判断参数为“语气缺失性、结构依赖性、概念非完整性”；而对于有形态标记的语言，“概念非完整性”并不是必要参数。语法隐喻是事件、状态、过程等向实体转换的机制，而非限定性一般介于隐喻式与一致式之间，是该机制的中间环节。通过“完全体现原则”“最少限定成分原则”以及三个参数，可以很好地解答英语和汉语中有关非限定的各种疑难现象。其中，八种过程关属类型对现有的小句理论、复句理论有参考价值。根据过程关属，作者提出了三类小句间的关系，摒弃了传统的内部存在矛盾的关系。
总之，该研究视角独特、语料详实。着眼点虽然是非限定现象，但其中的理论框架完全可以用来研究其他的句法现象，对汉语研究和英语研究都有诸多启发。
